The Arizona Pastel Artists’ Association is a non-profit organization of pastel artists who are dedicated to promoting artistic creativity, art appreciation and increased awareness of pastel as a fine arts medium. Through workshops, programs and art exhibits, the APAA seeks to engage the broader community in the creative challenge, while encouraging and nurturing creative skills of our membership. |

History of Arizona Pastel Artists’ Association (APAA) The APAA was officially founded in 1994 by Ruth Palmisano, a local avid and accomplished pastel artist. She initiated the relationship between the fledgling APAA and the City of Phoenix, Parks and Recreations Department, establishing a centralized community-based meeting place at the Washington Adult Center which has been our home ever since. Annual membership averages around fifty.
The founding group established the non-profit status of the organization and the bylaws, emphasizing our inclusive approach to membership. We have continued the “everyone is welcome” tradition, providing interesting and challenging programs for the beginner as well as the experienced artist. Two art exhibits are held each year by the APAA, one juried show and one open membership show.
The APAA is a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and the Arizona Art Alliance (AAA).
APAA members have participated in free workshops open to the community through the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and in outreach classes through the Arizona Art Alliance at juvenile detention centers.
We have a point system whereby members who participate in art exhibits sponsored by the APAA, AAA and IAPS earn points toward Juried Membership and Signature Membership.
