January 2009
Martha Goodrich
Native of AZ? If not where you relocated from and how long ago? Although not a native I grew up in Tucson.
How long have you been involved with APAA? I joined in December 2007 so just one year.
In what capacities have you served APAA? I am keeping track of member points.
What formal art education, if any, do you have? I don't have any formal art education.
What informal art education, workshops, etc. have you taken part in that have impacted your art? I have been fortunate to take classes with Donna Stenger, Sue Hunter and Liz Kenyon.
Do you work in other media…or just pastel? Just pastel. I have tried watercolor but not successfully.
Are you a full time artist? If not are you still working? If so, what do you do? I am not a full time artist. I am a CPA and work for the federal government.
Are you a member of other art organizations as well? Yes, I am a juried member of the Sonoran Art League and Art Alliance.
What are your goals for your art…a career, second career, enjoyment or hobby, become rich and famous, etc.? My goals are to keep enjoying painting, evolve as an artist and be satisfied with my work.
Why have you chosen pastels as a medium? I decided in 2005 to take a drawing class at PVCC. The first 8 weeks were black and white. We were told to buy pastels to work in color for the rest of the class but I had no idea how to use them. Arizona Art Supply was having a pastel demo so I went to watch. It was done by Donna Stenger and she was real helpful in explaining how she was working etc. so I decided to sign up for her class at Brio. I was hooked from then on.
Do you work in themes or series? If not…do you have favorite topics? Having grown up in Tucson all I ever wanted was to get out of the desert. Now that I'm back I realize how beautiful it is. My favorite topic is trying to portray its variety.
Are you represented by any galleries? No.
Any experiences, awards, etc. that have been boosts for your career? Donna encouraged me enter the 2007 Glendale show. I did and won a 2nd place in pastels and sold my painting. I didn't even get a good photo of it since I had no idea that anybody would buy it.
Are you married? Do you have children? No and no.
Anything else that you would like to share about yourself? Up until 2005 I was very involved in training and showing dressage horses. After graduate school I moved to Germany, got a job with an accounting firm and bought a horse there. I wanted to ride there because Germany was and is the mecca of the dressage world. Eventually I returned to the US and brought my horse back with me. I have to admit that I was so focused on horses that I never took advantage of all the art museums, etc., Europe has to offer. Now that my interests have changed I would like to go back as an artist.
