Barbara Lang
Are you married? Do you have children?
Yes, I am married to Charlie and have one child David. I also have two and a half grandchildren.
Native of AZ? If not where you relocated from and how long ago?
We moved from Illinois to Arizona in 1999 after buying our home in four hours.
How long have you been involved with APAA?
I joined APAA in 2002. I think I heard about it from Sue Hunter in a workshop I took from her at West Valley Museum.
In what capacities have you served APAA?
I have been the blaster of e-mail messages for two years.
What formal art education, if any, do you have?
I have no art education. My masters degree was in Literature so I taught at the High School level full time and University level part time.
What informal art education, workshops, etc. have you taken part in that have impacted your art?
I consider the Pastel Journal and other art periodicals my teachers; however, I have taken workshops at the West Valley Museum from Kathy McCormick, Sue Hunter and workshops at two International Conventions from wonderful instructors. I am looking forward to learning a lot from Richard McKinley in Cortona this May. Of course Liz Kenyon has been a great support.
Do you work in other media…or just pastel?
Yes, I have worked in watercolor for many years as a hobby. Pastels are a more recent addiction.
Are you a full time artist? If not are you still working? If so, what do you do?
Yes, I spend most of my time in art related activities.
Are you a member of other art organizations as well?
Yes, I am a juried member of Arizona Art Guild, AAA, Wickenburg Art Club, Vangurard Artists and am a member of APAA, Chicago Pastel Painters, and the Sun City Grand Art Club.
What are your goals for your art…a career, second career, enjoyment or hobby, become rich and famous, etc.
Of course I would love to become rich and famous but am happy to continue enjoying this retirement thing which allows me time and energy to paint.
Why have you chosen pastels as a medium?
I love the vibrant color and the fact that I can get in there with my fingers, hold the pastels and fix things I don't like.
Do you work in themes or series? If not…do you have favorite topics?
Most of my pastels are landscape. We take our own pictures for reference so it is somewhere that I have loved. I would like to begin to work in themes more frequently.
Are you represented by any galleries?
No, I once was in the Canyonside Gallery in Wickenburg but it closed.
Any experiences, awards, etc. that have been boosts for your career?
I love ribbons and have received several. My best was when Ed Mell gave me first place in the Glendale Arts Council Show in 2007. I also was happy to be juried into a National show by Albert Handell.
Anything else that you would like to share about yourself?
I don't know what I would do without the support of the wonderful people in all of the organizations I belong to. The networking is more important than money.
