Donna Stenger

Native of AZ? If not where you relocated from and how long ago?
My home is Cincinnati, Ohio. It was necessary to move to Phoenix for my husband's career start in 1980.

How long have you been involved with APAA?
I joined APAA as a charter member in 1994.

In what capacities have you served APAA?
Over the last 14 years I have served as secretary (2 yrs), program co-chair, maintained the slide portfolio (3 yrs.), created signs for early shows, and presented several programs over the years.

What formal art education, if any, do you have?
I have a degree from the University of Cincinnati in Social Sciences, and took as many art classes as I could manage as electives. I also studied at the Cincinnati Art Consortium and Edgecliff College.

What informal art education, workshops, etc. have you taken part in that have impacted your art?
I have limited workshop experience, but my first class in Phoenix was taught by Judith Spyahalski, who was exceptionally inspirational and set an outstanding example for my teaching career.

Do you work in other media…or just pastel?
Pastel is my only painting medium.

Are you a full time artist? If not are you still working? If so, what do you do?
I am a full time artist and painting instructor.

Are you a member of other art organizations as well?
Currently APAA is the only organization I belong to.

What are your goals for your art…a career, second career, enjoyment or hobby, become rich and famous, etc.? My art intentions are to continue learning, experimenting, and sharing through teaching.

Why have you chosen pastels as a medium?
I prefer to skip the brush and work the color on to the ground with my fingers. The medium is easily corrected and portable. I built my career on the deft use of the kneaded eraser!

Do you work in themes or series? If not…do you have favorite topics?
The landscape was my first focus, then water scenes, and florals. Now I'm into a Couch/chair series and old Phoenix structures.

Are you represented by any galleries?
I have been a member of a cooperative studio/gallery space since 1997 currently named Gallery 623 & Studio 6 and share with APAA members Sandra Ortega, Paulette Redmond and Barb McGuire.

Any experiences, awards, etc. that have been boosts for your career?
My interest in pastel began in 1989 while doing the Art Masterpiece Program for my children's elementary school. It is magical working with children doing ART. That spirit has not left me!

Are you married? Do you have children?
I was married for 24 years and have two young adult children who enthusiastically support me.

Anything else that you would like to share about yourself?
I go to the Phoenix Art Museum on a regular basis (as if it were my neighborhood park). These trips provide inspiration as well as confirmation with regard to my growth. Teaching requires constant recitation of the fundamentals of painting. This mantra helps me critique my own work and is invaluable as is the Kneaded eraser!
